Disney’s Genie, Genie+, and Lightning Lane services launched on October 19th, replacing the retired FastPass system. These services change how you experience attractions and plan future vacations, offering customized, personal itineraries and premium access to the parks’ most popular attractions. No magic lamp is needed to decode how this program will help you experience the Disney parks. We break it down below!

What is Disney Genie and Genie +?

Disney Genie and Genie+ are two different services that share a similar title. Disney Genie is a complimentary electronic itinerary planner located inside the My Disney Experience app. Genie+ is a paid service allowing guests to experience shorter wait times on select attractions.

Disney Genie

Disney Genie offers personalized park itineraries from rope drop to fireworks. Once in the app, input your vacation information, attraction preferences, and can’t-miss experiences. Then, your Genie will create a personalized plan made just for you! Disney Genie gives you real-time suggestions when visiting the parks, like when preferred attractions have low wait times or suggesting to grab lunch at a nearby dining location. There is also a live chat feature that will allow you to instantly get answers to any questions you have during the day.

Disney Genie+

Genie+ gives guests front-of-line access to over 40 attractions at Walt Disney World. The service is available for $15 per ticket (per day) at Walt Disney World and $20 at Disneyland. With Genie+, you pick arrival windows at select attractions starting at 7:00 am on the day you visit the parks. Once you’ve checked into an attraction at the arrival window, you can continue to select rides one at a time throughout the day. You can book attractions across the theme parks as long as you have a valid park hopper pass. The service also includes extras like AR photo filters.

Some of the most popular rides may not be a part of the service. Guests who want to get the quickest access to the most popular attractions should consider purchasing a Lightning Lane pass.

What is Lightning Lane?

Lightning Lanes are the new name of the old FastPass entrances. Genie+ gives you access to Lightning Lane entrances for select attractions. However, you don’t need to purchase Genie+ to use the Lightning Lane. Guests may purchase an individual Lightning Lane pass and pick arrival windows for up to two attractions in a day. Pricing for a Lightning Lane pass varies based on the date and desired attraction.

Using Disney Genie and Genie+ as a DVC member

Every guest can take advantage of the Disney Genie service through the My Disney Experience app. If you’re purchasing regular theme park tickets and are staying at a DVC resort, you can add on the Genie+ service when you buy your park tickets. Then, you can make your first attraction selection at 7 am the day you plan to visit the parks. If you’re an Annual Passholder, you cannot add on Genie+ in advance and will need to wait until the day you plan to visit. Since no one can book attraction reservations until 7 am on the day you visit, though, you still have the same access to reservations as guests who purchased Genie+ in advance.

If you do not wish to add on these optional services, guests can still experience attractions by using standby queues as they have in the past.
